Safe Haven

For Agnes Bruckner, who was born and raised in Hollywood and loved to ham it up for the family's camcorder as a little girl, becoming an actress seemed like a logical career path. Bruckner spent her formative years on the small screen in roles for primetime dramas (like 24 and Alias and daytime soap (including a two-year sting as Bridget Forrister on The Bold and the Beautiful), before striking "it"-girl and critical-darling gold for her breakthrough lead role in 2002's coming-of-age drama Blue Car. This month, after a two-year hiatus, Bruckner returns to the big screen in the crime drama Haven, attempting to prove that while she may've been gone for a while, she definitely hasn't been forgotten.

Age: 20

Resume: The highly acclaimed indie flick Blue Car, as Meghan Dunning, a gifted poet abandoned by her parents; this month's Haven, alongside Orlando Bloom and Bill Paxton, as Pippa Ridley, the angst-ridden daughter of a shady businessman, whose life is uprooted when they must flee federal prosecution to the Cayman Islands; upcoming roles in Dreamland, Peaceful Warrior and Blood and Chocolate.

In The Driver's Seat: "I'm the most proud of [Blue Car] above all else," admits Bruckner of her breakthrough role. "It was a turning point with myself. I was 15 and like, 'This is what I want to do with my life.'"

Yah, Mon: "Well, she's a normal teenage girl who just wants to have fun, enjoy life and be normal." explains Bruckner of her character in this month's crime drama Haven. "But that doesn't end up happening. In a lot of ways, she’s like me, so I pulled a lot of things out of my own life for my character.

Pro-Pozoa: "I honestly love [Britney Spears]," Bruckner states, without irony. "I've been a loyal Britney fan from the moment I heard her. She just has this most incredible ability to perform. I mean she has kind of fallen off the wagon there, but she'll be back!"

Your first job in the business was a two-year role on the soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful. How cool was that?

Very! But I was so little, I really didn't know what I was doing or why I was doing it. But I learned a lot. I worked with so many different directors, and you have to memorize your lines so quickly.

Soaps are known for their out-there story lines, like psycho killers and evil twins. Did you have any like that?

[Laughs] No. I was kind of like the young daughter who came in and said, "Hi, Mom. Bye, Mom." Oh, I did have one storyline where I ran away from home. My parents were getting a divorce, and I didn't want it to happen. But, you know I was in Gap clothes. My hair was perfect. I had bronzer on my face to make me look dirty. It was like being in a play, because it was so overdramatic. I don't really consider myself an actress then; I was so little. But I'm happy but I'm happy to have it on my resume.

You've worked with so many A-List celebrities, like Orlando Bloom, Sandra Bullock and Jennifer Garner. Do you ever get star struck working with them, or is it just another day at the office?

Honestly, I'm a big star-struck person! I can't even speak if it's someone I admire. I don't know what that is. I mean they're normal people. They've just blown up to be king of like gods.

You're a 20-year-old serious actress living in Hollywood. What do you think of your peers--the Lindsay Lohans and Mischa Bartons--who seem better known for their private lives that their acting ability.

You know I look at those magazines when I'm at the grocery store. [Laughs] [The magazines] make [life] seem so crazy when it's not. They're beautiful young girls, so I say go for it. I think they're doing what they like to do, but it's something that comes with the job. Maybe one day, I'll get there where people are following me around while I'm driving, picking my nose or going to the bathroom barefoot. But you'll probably catch me sleeping in my bed a lot more.

Speaking of someone who uses public bathrooms while barefoot, I heard you were once mistaken for Britney Spears.

It was pretty cool! I was 16, and at the premiere of my movie Murder by Numbers. I was with my mom in this elevator, and it's weird because my mom looks a lot like Britney's mom. And this little 10-year-old girl thought I was [Britney]. It was a moment. [Laughs.]

Another thing you and Britney have in common is your love for tattoos. How many do you have?

Oh, God--let me count. One, two, three...Six. I love tattoos and putting marks on my body.

What and where are they?

I have a lion's tale for the Leo on my ankle. I got that with my mom when I was 16. We picked it out together, and I squeezed her hand [when they tattooed it]. Then three crosses--one is on my shoulder, another one is...I don't even know what body part that is. The one between my elbow and hand...

You’re Forearm?

Yeah--the forearm! So, yeah, it's obvious I hated school. [Laughs.] Then I have "Crazy Beautiful," written in the cross on my other, uh forearm. Then I have whatever doesn't kill me only makes me stronger" on my lower back. Finally, I have scratches on my back shoulder.

So when you're not getting inked, what do you do in your spare time?

My life is crazy. One week, I lock myself in my room and don't get out of bed for an entire week. And then the next, I want to go out to [L.A. celeb friendly nightclub] Teddy's and all the hotspots. That's the cool thing about being an actress. You get to work and then enjoy your life.

Look into your crystal ball: What do you see for yourself and your career

I'm just trying to find my next great project. I believe in myself, and I'm confident I'll get where I want to be. It's a rollercoaster. One minute, you're working; the next, you're not working for two years. But I'm in control so it’ll go my way.
